Note
"Inclosed you have an act of this state [not present] for speedily recruiting the Virginia Regiments on the Continental establishment by which it is inacted that the Governour do request the commander in chief of the American army to order into this state one general or field officer to give such orders as he may see cause for collecting the men as they are raised and marching them to the grand army."
"The King of Great Britain by his speech seems desirous of continuing the war with us which I now expect will be for some time."
"I hope France and Spain will find them sufficient employment in Europe and the West Indies to prevent any more men being sent here."
Also mentions his son George's intent to leave the service because he has not been promoted "as promised." Fielding tells Washington that he has advised his son to "advise you of the matter before he takes any step." George Lewis apparently remained in the army, eventually becoming an original member of the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati.
Docketed by Washington on p. [4]
Copy in case file.
