[1]. From "Hewsons China Shop, Strand" [London?], Feb. 23, 1781 to My dearest Nancy: busy with Dutch prizes he captured; [2]. From "Formidable at sea" Apr. 20, 1782: arrived safely at Barbados and "from thence to St. Lucia, where we found Sr. George Rodney in the ship [Idined?] Twice on board but did not get admitted to Sir George ....
[2] cont'd: "On ye 12th inst. (a goodly day for England) we had ye good fortune to fall in with ye French fleet, & after being engaged the whole day, routed them, took the french Admiral de Grasse in a ship of 100 guns called ye Ville de Paris, & burnt, sunk & took five line of battle ships.... I was on board ye Endymion ye first part of ye action & ye latter part on board ye Agamemnon who [sic] had been disabled, as were likewise ye Fame & Prince George."
Mentions his promotions after his actions in battle: "Captain Caldwell mention'd me to ye admiral .... [who] has made [me] seven captains, 3 before ye battle & 4 since. I am now in ye proper line, for it is imagined promotions will go on rapidly..."
An afterthought on p. [1] of item [2]: This goes by His Majesty's ship Eurydice who is charged with dispatches for England."
