The preface to the 1st edition, published under title "Memoirs of a cavalier" (London, [1720]) states that the "Memoirs" had been found "in the closet of an eminent publick minister" and were probably written by a "gentleman of quality." The publisher of the 2d edition (Leeds, [n.d.]) ascribes the authorship to "Shropshire gentleman" (Andrew Newport). It has also been ascribed to Robert Harley.
