After a morning audience presenting Larz’s credentials as ambassador to the Emperor, the Andersons pose with the rest of the American delegation, Suesaburo Ueno—the Japanese Master of Ceremonies—and the Lieutenant in Command of the escort in front of the American embassy in Tokyo before returning to the palace for a celebratory luncheon. The group is dressed in mourning for the July 1912 death of Emperor Meiji. The audience and photograph are described in Larz's journals, MSS L2004G19 v. 17, p.139-146.

In addition to the Andersons, the American delegation includes: Naval attache Lt. Com. Lyman Atkinson Cotten, Jr., Army attache Captain Hubert Llewellyn Wigmore, First Secretary Arthur Bailly Blanchard, Second Secretary Charles J. Arnell, and Third Secretary Frank Dundore Arnold. Elizabeth Henderson Cotten and Irene Elizabeth Wigmore, the wives of the naval and army attaches, are also present in the photograph. The staff of the Japanese embassy are described in Larz's journals, MSS L2004G19 v. 17, p.84-87.
