Attack on New England's deference to hereditary and other distinctions which are no firmly based on merit; "... who had nothing to boast of but their family distinctions," such titles are useless in a republic where all are equal before the law. He writes: "Dr. Franklin, speaking of birth, says In Europe it has indeed its value; but it is a commodity that cannot be carried to a worse market than to that of America, where people do not inquire concerning a stranger, What is he? but, What can he do?...."
