Full-figure, facing left, in uniform, wearing a blue sash. His left hand rests on the barrell of a canon and his right hand is holding his hat at his waist. The head of his horse, being held by an attendant is seen to the right. In the background is a battlefield (Battle of Princeton). No title or author appear on this poster. At the bottom of the poster below the print it reads: "DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery

This is a framed poster which acknowledges the fact that one of the copies of this painting of Washington by Charles Wilson Peale is hanging in the DeWitt Walace Decorative Artis Museum at Colonial Williamsburg. This same poster is available from other museums who display copies of this painting.
The original copy of this painting of George Washington was commissioned by the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania for the Council Chamber. Peale traveled to the Princeton and Trenton battlefields in 1779 to sketch for the portrait. The original, which now is displayed by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, was so successful that Peale completed multiple copies. The copy owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York was thought to have been commissioned by Mrs. Washington and is the only copy that shows the battlefield at Trenton. All other copies, including the one displayed on this poster, depict the Battle of Princeton.
