Several pages blank throughout the text, but included in pagination.
Containing technical observations on all aspects of gunnery, with a few additional pages on ship-building.
Includes practical information essential to a gunner, such as “the parly of a peece” (names of the parts of a gun), factors influencing the action of a gun, the respective merits of iron and brass in gun-making, how far the sounds of gun-fire travel, etc.
10 p. table comparing the names of guns and their heights of barrel, height of bullet, weight of shot, weight of gun and weight of powder at end.
Inverted 2 leaves: mention the number of ships and corresponding gun-capacity of 6 'R' (Regiments?), with a foot note "Besides 20 shipps & frigatts such they have bought and taken ... ye losse of a shipp of the 2nd ranke 25000th," and deducing the respective lengths of ships of different weights by means of ratios.
Bound in polished sheep; double-ruled at edges.
Armorial bookplate with motto (Faire Sans Dire): The Earl of Ilchester (probably from the library of the Earl of Ilchester at Holland House, largely destroyed during WW2)
