Experiments undertaken at the Royal Artillery at Woolwich by General Desaguliers, Chief Firemaster, relating to the major technological advance in infantry weaponry of the period, when British forces, still relying on flintlock muskets, were facing a challenge from the skilled American riflemen in the revolutionary war
Illustrated with 30 diagrams showing the position on targets of bullets fired from rifles and other long-bore firearms, each diagram measuring about 53 x 53 cm. and divided into 144 squares; also shows the result of comparative tests of the accuracy of American-made rifles and smooth-bore guns of the same size (provided evidence of the rifle's accuracy)
Watermark: fleur-de-lis with crown and shield and a countermark (IVILLEDARY)
Bound in half-calf on marbled boards, lettering in gilt on spine.
Armorial bookplates with motto (Sapere Aude): Militar. collection of the Hon. Lt. Genl. G.L. Parker (2nd son of Thomas, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield & Colonel of the 20th Foot Regiment during the 1776 Canadian and 1777 Saratoga campaigns); South Library, 1860. Blind ownership stamps with motto (Sapere Aude) on first 3 leaves.
