Note
Dutch satirical print, entitled "The brave and watchful lion" illustrating the diplomatic tensions caused by the armed neutrality during the American Revolution, and which, would result in the Anglo Dutch war, 1780. The scene depicts the English Channel as a stage with the ports of Amsterdam, The Hague, Brest and Portsmouth shown at the top. Nine people and a lion, representing commerce, appear on the stage. Each person is expressing their opinion. A "verklaaring" or explaination appears in letterpress text below the engraving and follows a numbered key for each figure shown. The year "1780" appears at the end of the text.
