Symmes writes of news of mutual friends and his attraction to an acquaintance of Col. Anderson.
Symmes was a justice in the New Jersey Supreme Court, served in the Continental Congress from 1785-1786, and Ohio Territorial Court Judge after 1788. He is best known for his involvement in real estate speculation in Ohio with the Miami Purchase in 1794, also known as Symmes Purchase. The venture was plagued by poor planning and confusion due to poor surveying and Symmes refusal to follow Congressional guidelines. The results prompted the federal government's decision to sell Western land thereafter directly to settlers rather than private speculators. William Henry Harrison married Symme's daughter Anna and was thus his son-in-law.
