Reissue of Hale's best known work, which was originally published anonymously in 1863; here with a later introduction by the author. This Civil War allegory about a young lieutenant who renounces his country and is sentenced to live out his life on a navy ship, ends with the protagonist's death: "But in an hour, when the doctor went in gently, he found Nolan had breathed his life away with a smile. He had something pressed close to his lips. It was his father's badge of the Order of the Cincinnati."
