Three-quarter length to the right, seated, with legs crossed, at a table, upon which are a cocked hat, with large rosette, and a plan of the city of Washington, with the river lettered "Eastern Branch" upon which rests his left arm, while one corner of the plan is held by his right hand. The background is a figured curtain, drawn, showing a column. To the right, outside a draped curtain, is an urn on a pedestal, inscribed, "G.W. ; Ob.t Decb.r 14th 1799 AE 68." On the side of the pedestal it reads, "The Grateful Tribute of His Admiring Countrymen." and on the front of the pedestal, a verse in three lines. Messotint.
This is some kind of photoreproduction of a framed copy of the original engraving, since the shaded mat opening with single line border is shown. The quality of the reproduction is poor and dark. In the lower left corner is handwritten, "No. 253." According to Hart, there were only 100 impressions made from the original plate, so original copies are rare.
This reproduction was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wright. Along with the notation of the gift, it says that it was believed to have been owned by Larz and Isabel Anderson. Perhaps the Andersons owned the original, and this reproduction was acquired by the Wrights.
The reproducation has been removed from its simple document frame to be properly preserved in the P&E files in the vault.
