With loving greeting | Best wishes on your birthday [print]

This is a printed birthday card. The cover is decorated with stylized flowers in a vace and within a scrolled border box the words “With Loving Greeting”. Inside on the left is a colored drawing of white blossoms and within a circle the words "Best wishes on your birthday." Inside on the right is a colored drawing of roses and within a circle the words: "I wish thee happiness. Pericles I.I." In handwriting across the bottom of the inside pages it reads: "One of many birthday cards received by Mrs. Nathaniel R. Greene on her 100th birthday, and presented by me to her, Sept. 1885. [signed] Mary Skipwith Roberts." The back cover is similar to the front with stylized flowers. A golden colored fringe surrounds the edges of the card and two tassels hang from the right edge.
This is a lovely example of a 19th century greeting card. The Mrs. Nathaniel R. Greene who received the card is not Catharine Littlefield Greene, 1755-1814, the wife of Nathanael Greene of the revolutionary period. Mary Skipwith Roberts appears to be from an established New Orleans family, and probably the Mrs. Greene who received the card is also from New Orleans.
