Note
Photographs of the two original watercolor paintings of naval battle scenes mounted on a mat board. Below each photo are a few lines of historical information handwritten in ink. The artist's name has been added in the lower right hand corner of the first photo. The letters below the top photo are as follows: "The unsuccessful attack on the Fort on Sullivan's Island the 28th. of June 1776." The letters below the lower photo are as follows: "The morning after the engagement on Sullivan's Island. The ships of war having retired a few miles below the Fort are on a keel repairing damages and particularly stopping shot holes between wind and water etc. Dispatch boats and other vessels are seen a few miles off passing and repassing between the fleet and Sir H. Clinton's army on Long Island to the east of Sullivan's Island."
These naval battle scenes were painted by Lieut Henry Gray, who was attached to the 2nd. South Carolina Regiment led by Moultrie. The orginals are without letters nor the signature of the artist.
Another set of prints of the original watercolors are catalogued P&E L1993.792. A second set of photographs are catalogued as PHOTO L2006D52.
