Note
Greene, full figure, body to the right, head to the left, in uniform. His right hand at his waist holding hat. His left hand at his side holding his right hand glove. In the background is an aide holding a rearing horse and soldiers in battle.
Below the print it states: "J. Brown, Excudit." Below the title it reads: "From an original picture in the possesion of Mr. Brown. Published by him April 22d 1785 and sold at N.o 10, George Yard, Lombard Street, London."
Peale sent Benjamin West portraits of Gen. Washington and Gen. Greene from which engraved plates were to be made. Joseph Brown of London purchased the canvases from West and undertook the publication of two mezzotint engravings of the subjects.
Nathanael Greene was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of Rhode Island.
INCOMPLETE RECORD. Study not complete concerning whether or not this is a photographic reproduction of the original mezzotint Or is it a copy? The misspelling of "Peel" and "Green" do not seem to be associated with the original. This portrait is listed as a part of the George Washington Bicentenial Commisssion files stored at the University of Maryland. Perhaps this was a souvenoir copy distributed during the celebration? RESPONSE: There are 4 copies of this messotint in the New York Public Library Digital Collections. Only one has letters, and is identical to the one in this P&E collection. There is another photographic print in the library Vertical File for Greene, which is from an unidentified book and again is identical to the one in the P&E collection. The misspelling of "Green" is not at all unusual. The presence of all the letters on this copy would supportive evidence that it is a copy of the original messotint. [FJJ, 09/13/2018]
