Scene of Elisabeth Grace and Rachel Martin, dressed in their husband's clothing and armed with pistols, demanding that a courrier and two British officers hand over the secret papers they were taking to the enemy. Rectangle with single line border 5/16. Inserted in the border at the top is the alternate title: Annals of the United States illustrated : The women of the Revolution Pl. I. Below the border are the citations to the artist on the left and to the lithographer on the right. Next to the name of the lithographer it reads: Printed by Lemercier, Paris. In the center is the copyright information.
Below the print is the title and a description of the scene from Mrs. Ellet's book, The women of the American Revolution, Vol. I, p. 247. The title and the description are printed in English of the left, and in French on the right. The name of the publisher appears at the bottom in the center.
This engraving was photographed for reproduction, along with the companion engraving of Nancy Hart, as Chapter One illustrations in the book, Side-by-Side, a photographic history of American women in war, by Vickie Lewis, in 1999.
