A poster advertising a pair of stamps issued October 16, 1981, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Battles of the Virgina Capes and Yorktown. At the top of the poster are the two stamps, one featuring a map of Virginia showing Yorktown, and the second showing ships in the waters between Cape Charles and Cape Henry off the Virginia shores. Below the stamps is reads: "O God! It is all over! The French naval victory off the Virginia Capes and the subsequent British surrender at Yorktown marked the last great campaign of the war. The news of Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown was slow to reach Lord North at 10 Downing Street. But his reaction was immediate and deadly accurate: "O God! It is all over!" These stamps commorate the 200th anniversary of the battles of the Virginia Capes and Yorktown. Stamps available after October 16." Pictured to the right is the bone model of the frigate L'Achille (courtesy of the Navy Memorial Museum), and below it a leather hunting bag with power horn and deer antler powder measure (courtsey of Anderson House), and on a map of the Battle of Yorktown (courtesy of the Library of Congress) are toy soldiers representing the British battery and the Virgina Militia and officers with French flags (courtesy of Anderson House) and additional British, American and French troops (courtesy of Steven Guest). Below the artwork it reads: "October is national stamp collecting month. Discover Stamp Collecting. The hobby of a lifetime." At the bottom are the descriptions of the art work and the emblem of the United States Postal Service. The poster was to have been posted in U. S. Post Offices between October 12 and November 6, 1981.
