Document in a secretarial hand, signed and sealed by John de Berdt as supplier and witnessed by William Phelps and Ronald Gibson.

Two embossed 6d tax stamps at top of p. [1]
De Berdt undertakes to supply " ... four hundred and twenty barrells of gunpowder tower proofe on third part to be fine, the other cannon powder well condicon'd [sic], corn'd, cropt and dryed and barrell'd and casqu'd in good casque ..." The powder was to be made from saltpetre " ... to be receiv'd from the New East India Company ..." and to be delivered to the ordnance in eight to nine weeks from taking in the saltpetre, " ... provided he be not hindred [sic] by the blowing up of mills or other unavoidable accidents ... "The powder was to be guaranteed to " ... hold and undergoe [sic] seven years duration for tryall from the day of proofe thereof ..." and found to be "decayed or uinserviceable" to be removed by de Berdt and replaced with "like quantity of good and serviceable gunpowder."
De Berdt purchased a powder mill and associated buildings at Wandsworth in 1702; War of Spanish Succession brought him success & he was a regular supplier to the Ordnance until his death.
