The scene in Independance Hall in Philadelphia of the signing of the Declaration of Independance in 1776. John Hancock is seated at the center table, with John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Benjamin Franklin standing with Thomas Jefferson at the table. Other delegates are seated around the room.
This engraving was probably made from the original painting which was made for engraving by Asher Brown Durand between 1786 and 1797. The Durand engraving was published in 1820. A replica of the original painting was done in 1818 for hanging in the United State Capilol Rotunda in 1824.
