Note
Three quarter length, to right, seated at table, in uniform. The Eagle of the order of the Cincinnati hangs from the left lapel of his coat. Dress sword rests on right arm, while right hand holds a document, the rest of which is on the table, partly covered by left hand. A drawn curtain shows an encompment in the distance. On a table to the right is a cocked hat with rosette. Below, surrounded by the title, is an eagle displayed with shield and ribbon inscribed: "E Pluribus Unum." Border 2/16. Stipple.
This is a modified copy of an original plate by the engraver David Edwin, identified as #788 in Hart (see P&E L2010F199 MP). On the Galland version, #789 in Hart, the title has been changed to honor John Barry, etc., and a rosette has been added to the cocked hat. This second variation of #789 in Hart is characterized by the removal of any acknowledgement of a publisher. A copy of the variation #789a in Hart, which acknowledges a publisher: "by Ferrai Dupin, Baltimore." in the lower right corner is catalogued P&E L1958.78.
A reproduction of this engraving has been framed and hangs in the Pennsylvania Suite at Anderson House.
