Note
A portfolio of the likenesses of the 24 Presidents of the United States up to 1901. They appear to be reproductions of the presidental oil paintings in the White House collection. Each portrait is titled with a facsimilie signature of the president and in the lower right, immediately below the portrait, each reads: "Copyright by James D. Richardson, 1899." The portfolio is covered with purple fabric with a black leather trim, about 10 cm. wide along the left edge of the cover. The title is embossed in gold on the purple fabric on the front cover.
This set contains 24 of the White House portraits. The prints are photomechanical reproductions of painted portraits. The presidents and the artist responsible, when known, for the portraits are as follows: George Washington, by Gilbert Stuart, Landsdown portrait; John Adams, by Gilbert Stuart 1789; Thomas Jefferson, by Eliphalet Frazer Andrews in 1884; James Madison, by Gilbert Stuart; James Monroe, by Gilbert Stuart; John Quincy Adams, by George Peter Alexander Healy; Andrew Jackson, artist unknown; Martin Van Buren, by George Peter Alexander Healy; William Henry Harrison, by Eliphalet Frazer Andrews; John Tyler, by George Peter Alexander Healy; James K. Polk, by George Peter Alexander Healy; Zachary Taylor, by Joseph Henry Bush; Millard Fillmore, by George Peter Alexander Healy; Franklin Pierce, by George Peter Alexander Healy; James Buchanan, artist unknown; Abraham Lincoln, by Francis Bicknell Carpenter, 1864; Andrew Johnson, artist unknown; Ulysses S. Grant, artist unknown, Rutherford B. Hayes, artist unknown; James A. Garfield, artist unknown; Grover Cleveland, artist unknown; Benjamin Harrison, artist unknown; and William McKinley, by August Benzinger.
There appear to be two similar publications of these White House portraits. One titled "The White House gallery of official portraits of the presidents" which was published by the Gravure Company of American in 1901 and 1907. The pages in this portfolio contain the presidental portrait along with a small engraving of a home or birthplace in the lower left below the portrait plus an accompanying page of text. This set of prints carry the copyright of the Gravure Company of America. The library has the pages for James Monroe (P&E L1993.714); Franklin Pierce (P&E L1993.718) and the portrait page only for George Washington (P&E L2006D49) This portfolio, titled "The White House Gallery of official Presidents Portraits", appears to contain the same White House portraits and may be the collection published by the Bureau of National Literature in 1912. There are some references indicating the Gravure Company of America portraits were printed by the Bureau of National Literature. This set of portraits makes no reference to the Gravure Company nor show the home or birthplace engravings, and are copyrighted by James D. Richardson, 1899. This same publisher published James D. Richardson's "Messages and papers of the presidents" in 1908.
