Fitzgerald, aide to Washington, business associate before and after the Revolution, wrote for Washington and signed as "Aid deCamp." " ... the deserter whom you mention is not yet arrived. I am of opinion that very many of our new rais'd troops will be foreigners without that necessary connexion which you speak of but hope his Excellency will be able to fall upon some method to prevent any material desertion ..."
