Military information in inset at lower left: Marlborough redoubt and the fort
St. Philip's fortress protected the harbor entrance, but Mahón, at the far end of the harbor and about three miles inland, could not be covered by the fort. Moreover, though some 2,860 officers and men "on paper" protected the island, approximately 40 officers were absent on New Year's Day, 1756. For a further description of this and other weaknesses at the time of the Byng response to the French invasion, see Dudley Pope. At twelve Mr. Byng was shot, p. 61-62.
