"References ... : A. French line of 12 ships with their heads to the N.W., their main top sails to the mast but this stearage way. B. English line of 13 ships, going down on the enemy, the Adm.l Byng, having just made the signal of the leading ship to lead large, in order to lead down slanting on the enemy, and avoid being raked. C. Five French frigates to leeward of their line. D. Four English frigates to windward of their line, and a scooner tender.
English ships: Defiance, Portland, Lancaster, Buckingham, Captain, Intrepid, Revenge, Pr.s Louisa, Trident, Ramilies (Byng's flagship), Culloden, Deptford, Kingston; attending frigates: Experiment, Dolphin, Proenix, and Chesterfield. The French ships of the line are not identified by name.
