Depicts the Cornwall, the Plymouth and others sailing in the channel off Tortuga; two French ships appear in the harbor near a fort.
Admiral Charles Knowles commanded the Cornwall and a squadron that included a Captain Dent in Feb. and March 1748. "In February 1748, with his flag in the Cornwall, Knowles took the squadron to the south coast of Cuba. After capturing Port Louis, Hispaniola ... he arrived off Santiago in April and prepared for an attack ... [which] resulted in a disagreement between Knowles and Captain Dent in the Plymouth ...." Oxford DNB, vol. 31, p. 978
On leaf 29r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng
Also on leaf 29r is A View & exact plan of the harbour of Port Louis, captured by Knowles on March 8th. Though successful at Port Louis, Knowles was later to face a court martial which resulted in an official reprimand, a stark contrast to Byng's sentence.
