Note
Three members of the Admiralty Board, seated around a table worry that Byng "will divulge all and we shall suffer"; and, ironically, "he'd hang us all to save himself"; and one wishes that they "could effect his escape." Byng, pictured with an ass's head, is seated at a table on which lies a "Treatise of Repentence"; his father's ghost begs that he not let the name of Torrington "be branded with names of treachery & cowardice" while the devil urges Byng to "turn evidence" against the admiralty. A newspaper on a table is dated Aug. 7-10, 1756.
