Note
Three-quarter figure, standing, body to the right, head to the left, in uniform wearing a hat. His right hand is outstretched to the right. Cannon being fired and a flag with the motto "An appeal to heaven," are seen in the background to the right.
Cresswell describes this as an idealized portrait of Lee with little resemblance to Lee who has been described as "tall and remarkably thin with an ugly face and an aquiline nose of enormous size." This mezzotint was later copied by J. M. Will in Augsburg and became the basis of later portraits.
The mezzotint is matted in white and is in a 1 inch wood frame in two colors; a dark stain on the outside and a gold painted section on the inside.
