Note
Benezit. Dictionnaire despeintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs et graveurs, vol. 7, p.564-65 claims that a Charles Mosley was a collaborator of Hogarth. It seems likely that the "C. Mosley" who signs this work is this Charles Mosley.
A young lass, "Molly", greets her sailor "Tom"; Tom's comrade Ned points to on open window where others are enjoying women and wine. Molly's mother, "more sagacious" opens a "wealthy chest", groping for "richest prizes" brought home.
Accompanied by 14 lines of poetry which end: Contemning wealth, which they with rifle obtain,/ Thus sailors live, and then to sea again."
On leaf 214r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-57; cf. another version of this "return" on leaf 138v of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-57, which was sold by C. Moseley [sic].
