Note
Eight men seated around a council table, apparently chaired by Byng, have agreed "not to pursue them [the French] but steer to G[ibralta]r." Two comment, " He that fights & runs away/ May live to fight another day"; and "But he that is in battle slain/ Will never rise to fight again." -- apparently a rendering of Byng's council of war in May, 1756, which actually included 17 men -- Dudley Pope. At twelve Mr. Byng was shot, p. 160
