Byng, dressed as a woman, is stopped by a sentry who asks, "Adm__l where are you going;" Byng replies, "I'm going to the necessary house." Byng's attempted escape was rumored in the streets of London despite the claim of the Evening Post of 16 September denying the claim that Byng had tried to escape in his sister's clothes.-- See Dudley Pope. At twelve Mr. Byng was shot, p. 216.
Four lines of verse below: B__g try'd all arts & all his friends in vain,/ To quit his prison, liberty to gain./ But soon the guards detect the intended flight,/ And found 'twas all a hum, his wants to shite.
Another engraving in this collection refers to the same rumor; see Bung's last effort, leaf 252 of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757.
