Lady Acland is shown in a boat offering a letter from Gen. Burgoyne to Gen. Gates toward the officer on guard at the American encampment to the left, after a night time journey on the Hudson River to join her husband, Major John Duke Acland, a British commander of grenadiers in Bugoyne's army, who was wounded, then captured at the Battle of Saratoga. The Rev. M. Brudinell has accompanied her in the boat and raises a flag of truce. Also in the boat is a female servant and her husband's valet. The flag shown flying over the American encampment is one of the earliest depictions of the Stars and Stripes. Rectangle.
