The artist may have been one Matthew Darley, who was an etcher, drawing master and print-seller, as well as a designer of caricatures -- cf. M. Dorothy George. English political caricature to 1792, p. [225]. Note the Acorn in the Strand is the sign of Edwards & Darly.
On the wall, pictures of "lots sold": P[or]t M[aho]n; Gib[ralta]r; N. A[meric]a; and to be sold: a portrait of Juda[s] Isca[riot], and A view of Newcastle "Damaged, the gold rubb'd off the frame and out of catalogue.
A sign on the auctioneer's podium reads: Now selling by auction at ye Ass in ye Lion's skin in Little Britain all ye valuable effects of John Bull ...
Figures indentified in pencil on attached slip below the engraving: the king of Prussia, the queen of Hungary, Lord Stanhope, Admiral Byng in chains, Andrew Slone (the auctioneer), the Pretender in Scotch plaid, and the Duke of Newcastle.
