Note
Depicts the Council of War called by Byng for 24 May 1756; seated round a table on board ship, each member expresses his own opinion about the proper course of action. Two of the accompanying lines: "This council (save two) ignobly agreed/ To keep in whole skins, not venture to bleed"
Some of the participants are identified with initials or abbreviated versions of their names. In Dudley Pope's At Twelve Mr. Byng Was Shot, illustration 20 reproduces this version of the cartoon. At the foot of the engraving appear fuller ms. identifications: left to right: Py, Parry (Captain of the Kingston) ; Ast, Amherst; LRB, Col. Lord Robert Bertie; Bd, Baird; C-s, Cornwallis; N-l, Noel; B-g, Byng (who asks the assembled, "Your opinions, Gentlemen, should we fight the French, land our men, or return to Gib....r" ; G-r (unidentified in ms., but Arthur Gardiner); D-l, Phil. Durrell; and E-m, Thomas Howard, Earl of Effingham. These names confirmed in Appendix V, p. 351 of the Pope book cited above.
At lower left: Pr. 6.d
On leaf 49r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng
For another version, see in this same collection, leaf 3v and 9v, neither of which contains the identifications present here. (Cataloged separately)
