Full-figure, seated to the right. His walking stick rests on his crossed knee and his holds a paper in this left hand on his lap. There is a table to the left with inkwell. A book stands on the floor next to a drapery to the right. Line. Rectangle. The title is a facsimilie signature. Below the title it reads: "From the original painting by Chappel in possession of the publisher"
One source attributes the engraving to T. Phillibrown. The painting is considered to be a Benjamin West type.
This engraving appears in several Johnson, Fry & Co. publications. This copy is most like the one in Duyckinck's National portrait gallery of eminent Americans, Vol. I, page 1.
Benjamin Franklin was made an honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati by the state of Pennsylvania in 1789.
