The engraving is based on the original monument in Westminster Abbey sculpted by Joseph Wilton.
Temple West was second in command under Byng in the Mediterranean; as commander of the van, he received considerable damages and was recalled to England. Unlike Byng, he received no offical or formal blame for the disaster at Minorca. When he heard the verdict in Byng's trial, he wrote to the admiralty board resigning his command; his relative, Lord Temple, "being First Lord prevented that timely resignation." -- Dudley Pope. At twelve Mr. Byng was shot, p. 302
A bust of West, flanked by flags, sits upon a base, an obelisk behind him; his coat of arms appears above and behind him on the obelisk.
