Note
The map and print-seller John Smith worked at the Hogarth's Head, Cheapside in the 1750's -- Plomer. Dict. of printers and booksellers ... 1726-1775; he may have also been the engraver of this print.
Byng cowers in the presence of the ghost of his father, Viscount Torrington, while in the background a crowd prepares to burn in effigy the hapless younger Byng, who holds a sign "I could not fight." On the table near Byng's elbow, are books bearing the names Matthews [sic] and Lestock (both of whom had been court martialled) and the Spanish Armada.
Below the engraving, a 40-line verse concludes: Dread, dastar'd, dread, the fatal Wrath/ Of nation and of King.
On leaf 26r of The tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757
