Note
Head and shoulders, to the right, in simple gray coat. Vignette.
The original Van Loo painting of Franklin showed him wearing a coat with a fur-trimmed collar. A color aquatint after Van Loo by Pierre Michael Alix substituted a simple gray coat for the fur costume, probably in deference to the revolutionary feeling of the later part of the 1700s. This engraving by Wilcox shows Franklin wearing the gray coat.

Benjamin Franklin was made an honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati by the state of Pennsylvania in 1789.
