This engraving appears to be after a series of similar likenesses based on a mezzotint by C. Corbutt in London shortly after the Quebec campaign in 1776. A series of other mezzotints after the Corbutt were produced in Augsburg, Paris, and an engraving after the Corbutt was published in Korn's Geischichte der Kriege in Nurnberg in 1778. A copy of this same engraving appears in the Society of the Cincinnati publication entitled, Portraits of Presidents General of the Order of the Cincinnati (call no. 369.131 R475, 1887). John Sullivan was the first President of the of the New Hampshire State Society.
John Sullivan was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of New Hampshire.
