For Byng's report of the condition of Tyrrell's ship the Buckingham, see leaf 206r in this vol. (p. [1] of the Appendix to The Trial.) Two men were killed and 7 wounded during the 24 May 1756 encounter with the French. For the line of battle, see leaf 207r, which contains p. (3) of the Appendix to The Trial. Tyrrell's name does not appear as captain at the time.
Three-quarter portrait, torso turned toward his left, head facing toward center, his right hand clearly showing the mutilation from a wound received in 1758 when the Buckingham intercepted a French convoy of superior strength. A naval scene, possibly of his flagship the Buckingham in the background.
Similar to the painting by Thomas Hudson in the National Maritime Museum, London; in this print, however, Tyrrell's left hand is empty whereas in the painting it holds a telescope.
