Published between 1739? and 1781, when Hinton 's London address was the King's Arms in Paternoster Row. -- H. R. Plomer. Dict. of printers and booksellers ... in England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1726 to 1775.
Within an oval frame, torso turned to his left, head turned toward the center, his left hand holding a book. Below the oval, a cartouche of musical instruments and the title, all within a double-ruled rectangle, below which is the imprint.
Voltaire had written to Byng on 2 Jan., enclosing a letter from Richelieu dated 26 December which said that Byng's "reputation ought not to be attacked for being worsted, after having done everything that could be expected. When two men of merit contend, one of them must have the disadvantage, without necessarily implying dishonour to the other." -- cf. Dudley Pope. At Twelve Mr. Byng Was Shot (1962), pp. 276-277.
