With a dealer's or auction catalog description pasted in. It is likely that the "charming mezzotint portrait" mentioned in the description is that found on leaf 199r and was purchased at the same time.
The letter speaks of "getting our friend Oswald [possibly Richard Oswald, the merchant and commissary general to Prince Eugene during the Seven Years' War] to the treasury board"; of the recent "disappointments on the continent"; and of his hope that the resources of Prince Ferdinand (probably the Duke of Brunswick) will turn the course of events in their favor. At the time of this letter, Legge was chancellor of the Exchequer.
Legge was one of the signatories to the Feb. 14 1757 opinion that Byng's sentence pronounced by the 12-judge panel was a legal one -- see p. 129 of "The Trial of Admiral Byng" on leaf 191 of this present volume.
