Note
Artist suggested by the Oxford DNB under "Legge", wherein three mezzotints "after Hoare" are mentioned: one by R. Houston (possibly Richard, 1721-1776) and another by one otherwise unidentified "Johnson", and a third with no engraver identified.
This present image is apparently like that without an identified engraver: NPG D3564.
Three-quarter port., seated, torso facing slightly to his right; head facing center. His right hand rests on his knee; his left hand holds a scroll of papers.
For another smaller, unsigned likeness, see leaf 205v in this The Tragedy of Admiral Byng.
Legge is one of the signatories affirming the legality of the sentence of the 12 judges on p. 129 of The trial of Admiral Byng, found on leaf 191r of this volume.
On leaf 199r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757.
