Three-quarter port. of Mansfield, seated, torso turned slightly to his left, head turned toward center. His right arm rests on the arm of his chair; in his left hand are a few sheets of paper. Below the port. appear the earl's arms and a two-line quote from Horace.
Mansfield was chief justice of the king's bench in 1756 as well as privy councillor and king's serjeant-at-law, 1756-88. His name appears first among the signatories who were "unanimously of Opinion that it [the sentence of Admiral Byng] is a Legal Sentence." -- cf. p.129 of "The trial" on leaf 191r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng.
