Note
Listed simply as George Dodington, Esq. on p. 129 of The Trial (on leaf 191r of The Tragedy), George Bubb Dodington sat in the council that received the report of the 12 judges who passed sentence on Admiral Byng.
Dodington (or Doddington) was born George Bubb but took on the name of his uncle, who had helped support him after the death of his father. He rose to become treasurer of the navy, and was one of the few to speak in Byng's defense at the latter's court martial.
Bust of Dodington turned slightly to his right.
On leaf 196r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757; on the same leaf, two title pages of Dodington's published works: -- Autobiography: A collection of the most instructive and amusing lives ever published ... Vol. XXII, George Bubb Dodington. London: Printed for Hunt and Clarke York Street ... s.d. -- The diary of the late George Bubb Dodington, Baron of Melcombe Regis ... London: Printed for Hunt and Clarke, 1828
