Note
Lord Bathurst sat on the King's council at its meeting on 16 Feb. 1757 -- see page 129 of The Trial (on leaf 191r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757) for a list of those present to receive the report of the 12 judges.
A pencilled annotation on the engraving identifies the subject as Henry Bathurst; his father, Allen, the first earl (1684-1775) was also a privy councillor, and it is possibly he who is the subject of the engraving. It was Henry, however, who was among those declaring the Byng sentence to be a legal one.
Bust facing slightly to his left.
