One of the most violent episodes in Maryland history when civil war broke out in England, Richard Ingle, once a chief trader and a ship captain, took control of Mayland's government in 1645 and attacked and destroyed the property of many Catholic settlers; sided with the radical Protestants, or Puritans, against the King and after disagreements with the Catholic leaders of Maryland, he decided to attack the colony in the name of Parliament
