This portrait is likely after the likeness of Hopkins that appears in Thumbull's painting of the Declaration of Independence. Hopkins was one of the signers. He appears in a rear grouping on the left, wearing a hat. This is a photomechanical reproduction of the original engraving on a new plate and is an illustration from Otto Trevelyan, The American Revolution (call no. 973.31 T812, 1909).
Stephen Hopkins served as governor of Rhode Island from 1755-1757.
