Full-length steel-engraved portrait, torso facing forward, head slightly to his right. In his left hand, he holds a scroll entitled "INFIRMARY"; his right hand holds his gloves.
John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich, sat on the King's council at its meeting on 16 Feb. 1757 -- see page 129 of The Trial (on leaf 191r of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757) for a list of those present to receive the report of the 12 judges. Previously, he had been first lord of the Admiralty from 1748 to 1751.
Another John Montague was captain of the Monarch in Plymouth Harbour at the time of Byng's execution.
