Bust within an oval frame, torso slightly to his right, head turned toward center. Below the portrait appear the Forbes crest and motto: Fax mentic incendium gloriae
On leaf 180v of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757, facing p. 137 of The Trial, on which is a memorial to the king from the commissioners of the Admiralty, one of whom was John Forbes who had served as second in command to Byng in 1747. . It was he who, despite the recommendation of the 12 judges, refused to sign the death warrant, deeming the judgment to be illegal. -- ODNB, vol. 20, p. 298.
