The artist is Major John Johnston, who needed to resort to painting to support himself after the Revolutionary war. He painted Samual Adams and Mrs. Adams. The painting of Governor Adams was done in 1795, was distroyed in a fire. Fortunately a mezzotint by Graham, taken from the original painting in 1797 was used by H.B.Hall to produce this engraving.
Major Johnston was an original member of the MA Society.
